Here we go again… Schroeder is in need of help, and our understanding.

Please check out this change.org petition, this guy needs some help now!

Help save Schroeder

I am the first to say “Don’t blame the victim” and mean it..,  but call me crazy here, if I was a mail carrier, and the door to a home I knew or suspected to have dogs residing within it was open, there is no way I would have ever stepped on to that porch or door step! Remember folks mail carriers have an easy out when it comes to dogs, if they feel that entering a property with dogs places them in eminent or immediate danger, they are not, repeat NOT obligated to go there!

In Canada a supervisor delivers a note card that states free roaming or mail slot aggressive dogs will result in the stoppage or pause of mail delivery. So I have to question whether all the facts are as the carrier see it, but in the long run that is not my call.

I feel for a dog that is placed in this or any situation where their reputation and or safety are put at risk, so with that said I also feel the owners had a great responsibility to their charge and they failed him! I know roughly when my carrier is coming, but it does change from time to time with seniority and shift changes, and with that said Monday to Friday  my door is kept closed until mail is delivered for that day, period and end of story! Weekends we occasionally get deliveries via courier, however both my dogs bark well in advance of anyone getting to the porch and when they bark I call them back and take them outside into our secured back yard, so that there is never a chance that  a carrier or delivery person will ever be injured and my dogs will never be seized.

So I will call them( the owners)  out on the carpet over this one, but their inactions or failures should not mean a strike out for this dog. He deserves the chance to stay in the living.

It should mean changes to how he is handled, or possibly a more responsible owner/s may be a better option than death. To me a nip or property line offense is a much different category than let’s say a mauling or vicious and aggressive attack. although all dog agression should never be treated lightly and should always be addressed immediately by a trained professional.

I truly feel for dogs in these circumstances because the majority of dogs view their home and people as something to be protected at all cost.

Honestly I just wish in general, dog owners would wake up, and be proactive enough to consider that even the friendliest of dogs can view delivery people in a different light than we do. I wish that before people get a dog, they take the time to properly educate themselves on how to successfully transition, raise, socialize and train dogs before they bring them home.

We must stop expecting dogs to live in our world, by our rules alone. Yes they must become accustom to our lives and interactions with others, as well as the way we do things and mostly what we expect from them, but we too must learn their language, understand their minds and body language, their very natures, if we are ever to successfully have a cohesive bond with them, and thusly a successful well-adjusted and happy companion at our sides.

Please consider giving Schroeder your support and sign and share his petition today!!!!!! Just because his family cannot afford the court fees does not mean this dog should die.

interesting fact: a golden retriever did the same thing last year, in Canada and… well he never left his yard! His owners were given a fine and restrictions on their dog, but he was not seized, so I guess the bias and breed discrimination continues, how sad!

Another dog shot by improperly trained police!!!! Just exactly how many of these will go on before we demand change?

The idea to do this post came to me from a contact on Facebook, Charlie Cifarelli. He has created a page: (Star The New York Pit Bull Shot by Police) here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/StarTheNewYorkPitbullShotByPolice Thank you Charlie for sending me the info and the link!

I understand the fear behind a rushing dog, believe me I do being the victim of a vicious dog attack, I above others understand that, however the dog that attacked me and this dog are in very different categories and circumstances.

In a society where we have companion animals, better understanding and training are quite obviously needed, I mean how many dogs have been shot this year by misguided and overly aggressive policing? Well there have been 8 reported cases in the USA and 3 reported in Canada to date this year, and I should say that I found, there could be more, so who knows the real numbers, we will never know about the unreported cases now will we?

Today police are so sadly and obviously untrained on how to deal with such situations, so let me give the good old boys in blue some insight, and this comes from over 30 years experience with dogs.., dogs give “bluff” rushes or “charges” in situations where they feel their safety or the safety of their pack is in question. That is Fact!

This dog was trying to back them off, to get people to step back, he was protecting his daddy! Plain and simple! This was no aggressive or dangerous dog, and he certainly was no “threat” to public safety.

My problem with this is a two-fold one, and it comes to play when I see police men/women not taking the “proper” steps in conflict resolution with companion animals more specifically dogs. My concerns are as follows;

Firstly the use of deadly force, when a taser or pepper spray should have been the first choice, and deadly force the last and only option, I can also tell you that pepper spray or mace would have incapacitated that dog long enough to subdue him. All police officers should be equipped with such items, Yes???

Secondly the dog appears to have no leash on, so again, we have a situation where a pit bull is out in public without proper protection, yes that’s right protection, like it or not as bully/ pitbull/ mastiff/ boxer/ rotti/ owners we are all under the microscope, ALL OF THE TIME, and we MUST protect our dogs.

As an example I always “umbilical” or waist belt my dog when we go for walks, ALWAYS!  I am not blaming the victim by any means rather I feel for this man, on many levels, but… had he been leashed, had a leash been around his owners hand, or waist maybe the outcome could have been different.

For me anyway, this is proof that police are NOT properly trained, and yet are given guns, given weapons that kill, and given carte blanch to do so, and very little training to go along with that heavy burden. It is shameful to me! It is scary that a police officer can say something like “I only had 10 seconds to react, so what could I do?” and all of a sudden it wipes the slate clean. It shouldn’t! So here’s just one more thing to think about if it was your dog, or child, or husband that they perceived in 10 seconds to be a threat, would it wipe the slate for you?

Many aspects of police work, standards and policies MUST be revamped and much more in-depth training simply MUST take place for the safety of all citizens, and their pets!

Here is the video originally released on YouTube: Star shot by improperly trained idiot policemen

What do you think about this? Please feel free to comment.

Thanks

I am proud to announce this week is the very first “Pit Bull of the week” and this weeks star is…

Huckleberry and his beautiful sister Holiday! Below we see Huckleberry and his dad I believe, pretty cute baby picture right?

 What a face!

I included this one of Huckleberry and his sister Holiday because just like him, she is so darn cute and family always has to stick together! Huckleberry and Holidays mom tells me that she was very quickly won over by the pit bull personality, I can relate! She also says that Holiday was a rescue from a storage yard, well… you know what they say, one mans junk is another’s treasure! Thanks so much to Tom and Esther for sharing their beautiful babies with us all!

It takes all of us sticking together, working together, and networking as one united group to create change, and with owners like you both out there, we get one step closer every day!

As stated in my pics post, every week on friday I would like to feature a very special pit bull (and family) if the pictures include their human sidekicks.

Please share with your friends, and please above all else, keep the pictures coming! Keep in mind here at Apitome’s blog we don’t discriminate based on breed, but obviously we are trying to spotlight dogs labeled under the “dangerous dogs” banner, so we are trying to focus on Pit bulls, pit mixes, etc.,  But by all means don’t hold back we are always willing to show pictures of your dogs too!

Let’s show the world how great our dogs are! Lets change some hearts and minds, and lets kick down some barriers and walls!

Our dogs would do anything for us, so it’s the least we can do for them.

Have a great weekend everyone!

I love Total Dog!

English: American Pit Bull Terrier

Image via Wikipedia

This was a great article for those on the fence over which dog poses the biggest risk to society and other animals. Thanks Total Dog Magazine, I am sending a huge bark out just for you!

and the most dangerous dog is….

Finally a little truth is spoken, breed absolutely does not play a factor in whether or not a dog will bite. It’s time for people to wake up a tad, and see that it all starts and ends with the human. How do you train, raise, feed, and love your dog? That is key!

Remember that the next time you hear the media shout “Pit Bull” from the roof tops and don’t forget to ask did they check breed DNA or could this one be a ridgeback, or mastiff, or lab too!

Petition to end BSL

Petition to change laws and Ban BSL

And change is as easy as one little step, many states are now seeing that BSL simply does not work. Now here’s your chance to help. Please share this petition and let’s make some positive laws that support responsible ownership and remove bylaws and legislations that kill dogs and destroy families!

Thank you

What should be on every rescue and shelter answering machine..,

Hello: You have reached… (123) 4556-7890.

Due to the high volume of calls we have been receiving, please listen closely to
the following options and choose the one that best describes you or
your situation:

Press 1 if you have a 10-year-old dog and your 15-year-old son has
suddenly become allergic and you need to find the dog a new home
right away.

Press 2 if you are moving today and need to immediately place your
150 pound, 8-year-old dog.

Press 3 if you have three dogs, had a baby and want to get rid of
your dogs because you are the only person in the world to have a
baby and dogs at the same time.

Press 4 if you just got a brand new puppy and your old dog is having
problems adjusting so you want to get rid of the old one right away.

Press 5 if your little puppy has grown up and is no longer small and
cute and you want to trade it in for a new model.

Press 6 if you want an unpaid volunteer to come to your home TODAY
and pick up the dog you no longer want.

Press 7 if you have been feeding and caring for a “stray” for the
last three years, are moving and suddenly determine it’s not your
dog.

Press 8 if your dog is sick and needs a vet but you need the money
for your vacation.

Press 9 if you are elderly and want to adopt a cute puppy who is not
active and is going to outlive you.

Press 10 if your relative has died and you don’t want to care for
their elderly dog because it doesn’t fit your lifestyle.

Press 11 if your cat is biting and not using the litter box because
it is declawed, but you are not willing to accept the responsibility
that the cat’s behavior is altered because of your nice furniture.

Press 12 if your two-year old male dog is marking all over your house
but you just haven’t gotten around to having him neutered.

Press 13 if you previously had an outdoor only dog and are calling
because she is suddenly pregnant.

Press 14 if you are calling at 6 a.m. to make sure you wake me up
before I have to go to work so you can drop a dog off on your way
to work.

Press 15 to leave us an anonymous garbled message, letting us know
you have left a dog in our yard in the middle of January, which is
in fact, better than just leaving the dog with no message.

Press 16 if you are going to get angry because we are not going to
take your dog that you have had for fifteen years, because it is
not our responsibility.

Press 17 if you are going to threaten to take your ten-year old dog
to be euthanized because I won’t take it.

Press 18 if you’re going to get angry because the volunteers had the
audacity to go on vacation and leave the dogs in care of a trusted
volunteer who is not authorized to take your personal pet.

Press 19 if you want one of our PERFECTLY trained, housebroken, kid
and cat friendly purebred dogs that we have an abundance of.

Press 20 if you want us to take your dog that has a slight
aggression problem, i.e. has only bitten a few people and killed your
neighbor’s cats.

Press 21 if you have already called once and been told we don’t take
personal surrenders but thought you would get a different person this
time with a different answer.

Press 22 if you want us to use space that would go to a stray to
board your personal dog while you are on vacation, free of charge,
of course.

Press 23 if it is Christmas Eve or Easter morning and you want me to
deliver an eight week old puppy to your house by 6:30 am before
your kids wake up.

Press 24 if you have bought your children a duckling, chick or baby
bunny for Easter and it is now Christmas and no longer cute.

Press 25 if you want us to take your female dog who has already had
ten litters, but we can’t spay her because she is pregnant again and
it is against your religion.

Press 26 if you’re lying to make one of our younger volunteers feel
bad and take your personal pet off your hands.

Press 27 if you have done “everything” to housebreak your dog and
have had no success but you don’t want to crate the dog because it
is cruel.

Press 28 if you didn’t listen to the message asking for an evening
phone number and you left your work number when all volunteers are
also working and you are angry because no one called you back.

Press 29 if you need a puppy immediately and cannot wait because
today is your daughter’s birthday and you forgot when she was born.

Press 30 if your dog’s coat doesn’t match your new furniture and you
need a different color or breed.

Press 31 if your new love doesn’t like your dog and you are too
stupid to get rid of the new friend (who will dump you in the next
month anyway) instead of the dog.

Press 32 if you went through all these ‘options’ and didn’t hear
enough. This press will connect you to the sounds of tears being
shed by one of our volunteers who is holding a discarded old dog
while the vet mercifully frees him from the grief of missing his
family.

Author Unknown, but much appreciated!

Please remember that if you can not commit to fur-always or at least the next 13-17 years, DON’T BUY A PET! it is not a shelter or rescue’s obligation to take on your commitments, they do so out of fear that you will kill them if they don’t, and dumping them anywhere, even alone on the side of a road is abuse!

Update on the “Emaciator” otherwise known as the disgusting Kisha Curtis!

I Just found out that Kisha’s grand jury hearing was this afternoon, and there they will decide if there is enough evidence in the case to charge her. They must determine whether she is innocent or guilty, if they find her guilty a felony conviction could be next. The hearing will continue next friday, New Jersey SPCA will be testifying. I certainly hope they will see through her nonsense and take aim at her! It’s time folk’s it’s time for pit bull abusers to face the music. I want to see her behind bars for a very long time, and I would like to see her right to own animals revoked permanently.

While all this goes on Patrick continues to do well here is his updated photo;

Isn’t it amazing what a little food and some TLC can do for a dog!  And Kisha, living well is the best revenge, despite all you did to kill him, he still made it! To all of Patrick’s supporters, please note that he still needs you. Please be his voice, stand up and speak out for him. Pit Bull abuse has to stop!

We love you Patrick, you have changed the face of animal abuse, you made it real and no longer acceptable for so many. I wish you never had to endure what you did, I often think wouldn’t it have been nice for you to have only known a tender touch and a mom that cared!
