Category Archives: Dead Wrong

I know, I know I have been MIA for some time now…

Well gang this has been a crazy year, I have completed my dog training coarse, and I am now certified. I am finishing odd another coarse now so that’s why I haven’t been as devoted here.

Last week I got word that a fellow rescuer friend of mine has fallen on hard times, she did a wonderful YouTube video a few years back that I would love to re share now:

Pit bulls – you can be a voice for the voiceless

I am sending out an urgent call to arms on Kym’s behalf, she lost her job a while back and has now lost her home, the home she shares with her two rescued pit bulls Max and Sam, who have a Facebook page Max and Sam we are emma shay’s legacy (https://www.facebook.com/weareemmashayslegacy?fref=ts)  if you want to show them some love.

Kym has worked tirelessly over the years for pit bulls, fighting BSL, and working in rescue, she has given of herself so freely and with an open heart, I have set up a fund-raiser for her in hopes she can secure a new home and to  get set up. Any left over money will go to rescue, shelter aid and care, because that’s Kym, she’s always thinking about ways to pay it forward!  Watching her go through this has been very hard, seeing bad things happen to good people really angers me!

The fund-raiser can be found here:

Helping a rescuer keep her pit bull family together

My sincere wish is to help a wonderful lady, a bank account specifically for her fund-raiser will be opened on Monday and I will update that for those who wish to verify where their donations are going.

Please any fellow rescuers, pit bull owners, advocates, please share the links so we can get help for Kym and her crew as we can, and please if you can donate!

Thank you everyone for hanging in there while I completed my training, thanks for sharing my posts and for standing up for pit bulls and abused and neglected dogs everywhere!

I’m back, where I’ve been and what’s up next

28748_166911366782736_147438333_nHi gang!

I have not been posting in a while, mostly because of my dog training course.

I am in the last phase of the program and I have been very busy getting ready for my final, I am looking for some rescues to help me out with an essay I am writing so I am hoping that I get some responses.

I need three shelters or rescues willing to be interviewed by phone I need to know the percentages of dogs relinquished, the reasons why they were relinquished, the percentages  of dogs adopted and percentages of dogs euthanized, and why.

rehabilitation training to prevent dogs from losing potential homes, and training to make homeless dogs more adoptable

Also the numbers and reasons why dogs are returned after adoption.

My goal as a trainer is to keep dogs out of the shelters and to stop euthanizations due to a lack of training, and also to help people to understand how important proper training is and why it should be part of every responsible owners priority and gift to their pets success as a member of our society.

If anyone knows of shelters and rescues interested in helping me out with this please send me an email at apitomesblog@shaw.ca and please include the shelter or rescue name and address, contact persons name, title and phone number.

Remember folks keeping animals safe and out of the shelter systems is or should be a primary goal.

Thank you to everyone that visits my blog, comments, and shares their own experiences, without you all this would all be for nothing! It’s you that have helped me help them, so again thank you very much! I appreciate it deeply!

After graduation I look forward to sharing many things with you all, and getting back to what I love, helping dogs in need and tending to my blog! I am hoping to include some free basic training videos for you all to share and enjoy.

Here we go again… Schroeder is in need of help, and our understanding.

Please check out this change.org petition, this guy needs some help now!

Help save Schroeder

I am the first to say “Don’t blame the victim” and mean it..,  but call me crazy here, if I was a mail carrier, and the door to a home I knew or suspected to have dogs residing within it was open, there is no way I would have ever stepped on to that porch or door step! Remember folks mail carriers have an easy out when it comes to dogs, if they feel that entering a property with dogs places them in eminent or immediate danger, they are not, repeat NOT obligated to go there!

In Canada a supervisor delivers a note card that states free roaming or mail slot aggressive dogs will result in the stoppage or pause of mail delivery. So I have to question whether all the facts are as the carrier see it, but in the long run that is not my call.

I feel for a dog that is placed in this or any situation where their reputation and or safety are put at risk, so with that said I also feel the owners had a great responsibility to their charge and they failed him! I know roughly when my carrier is coming, but it does change from time to time with seniority and shift changes, and with that said Monday to Friday  my door is kept closed until mail is delivered for that day, period and end of story! Weekends we occasionally get deliveries via courier, however both my dogs bark well in advance of anyone getting to the porch and when they bark I call them back and take them outside into our secured back yard, so that there is never a chance that  a carrier or delivery person will ever be injured and my dogs will never be seized.

So I will call them( the owners)  out on the carpet over this one, but their inactions or failures should not mean a strike out for this dog. He deserves the chance to stay in the living.

It should mean changes to how he is handled, or possibly a more responsible owner/s may be a better option than death. To me a nip or property line offense is a much different category than let’s say a mauling or vicious and aggressive attack. although all dog agression should never be treated lightly and should always be addressed immediately by a trained professional.

I truly feel for dogs in these circumstances because the majority of dogs view their home and people as something to be protected at all cost.

Honestly I just wish in general, dog owners would wake up, and be proactive enough to consider that even the friendliest of dogs can view delivery people in a different light than we do. I wish that before people get a dog, they take the time to properly educate themselves on how to successfully transition, raise, socialize and train dogs before they bring them home.

We must stop expecting dogs to live in our world, by our rules alone. Yes they must become accustom to our lives and interactions with others, as well as the way we do things and mostly what we expect from them, but we too must learn their language, understand their minds and body language, their very natures, if we are ever to successfully have a cohesive bond with them, and thusly a successful well-adjusted and happy companion at our sides.

Please consider giving Schroeder your support and sign and share his petition today!!!!!! Just because his family cannot afford the court fees does not mean this dog should die.

interesting fact: a golden retriever did the same thing last year, in Canada and… well he never left his yard! His owners were given a fine and restrictions on their dog, but he was not seized, so I guess the bias and breed discrimination continues, how sad!

This one is about pit bulls and this pretty mama needs our help! Here’s the rescue of the week:

This little gal and her babies are very urgent, so please feel free to share her, let’s get this little family out of danger, her details are:

The person who brought them in was homeless and had been trying to care for them on her own. All of the puppies have upper respiratory and are a little bit thin. We think the puppies are about 10 days o…

ld. Mom is very friendly but she does need some help with her kids. Mom is nursing them but we do not think she is nursing them enough. This family is in need of IMMEDIATE RESCUE. O.K. so this one is not about pit bulls but it’s important, and they really need our help to end the madness that is the cove! Please share, and speak out.

URGENT: The latest is a very big pod with a baby are netted in the Cove in Taiji Japan for killing!

If you can share this info they might be saved. We are being asked to phone the Japanese embassies now! Perhaps it will save the dolphins? If not maybe it will finally garner the change these beautiful mammals need!

List of japanese embassies: ( Links) http://www.mofa.go.jp/about/emb_cons/mofaserv.html
MOFA: Japanese Embassies and Consulates Websites www.mofa.go.jp It was asked that people be polite so there will be more chance of the Japanese considering saving the dolphins. It’s ok to show emotions, but get the words out!  It’s not just a dolphin, or pilot whale, these are sentient beings, they grieve they cry out for one another, they see their own family members being killed, can you imagine that? Are you foolish enough to think they don’t have feelings? Please speak out about this awful practice, boycott aquariums, and dolphin resorts selling “swims” these animals have saved humans countless times, now it’s our turn to return the favor!
This was a photo taken from Taiji the dolphins that are not bought by zoo’s, animal brokers, and resorts are not let go, they are slaughters and sold as “tuna”, Yes you heard right Tuna. Activist Rick O’Barry proved that and how far Japan’s Fishing commission will go to cover it up.
I also encourage people to call these aquariums and resorts, let them know what your feelings are and take what they say with a grain of salt, after all they are in on this practice they know full well what goes on in Taiji, and yet they keep paying for more!
Pilot whales are killed by the thousands each year in Taiji and the Faroe islands, and we must take a stand before there are no dolphins or whales left!

A little truth about pet brokers I bet you did not know

My little tip of the day for those folks out there that still insist on buying from pet stores: Did you ask where they get their pets from? Did they say Rainbow World Exotics? Did you buy it anyway? If so, you the reason for animals suffering needlessly, and you are part of a major problem in companion animal abuses!!! Truth!!!  You have just bought your pet from one of the biggest animal brokers …

in the USA, and yes my Canadian friends they sell to our pet stores as well! Rainbow is not alone in their abuses, there are many, many brokers/companies with all the same practices which include: no veterinary care, killings without anesthesia, surgeries preformed on animals by laymen (people without accredited training) also without benefit of proper anesthesia, starvation, and much more! Did you know that animals deemed “unsellable” are used as breeding stock this includes animals with broken limbs, deformities, and much more???? Well now you know, now I hope you take the time to educate yourself on the truth and the reality of pet store pets, this includes back yard and unscrupulous breeders as well! Take the time to visit your local shelter, rescues, and animal control facilities first! if you did just that one thing, just imagine the suffering that one small act could end!!!! Rant concluded!
Please remember that PETA is about PETA, and donations, and not much more! Certainly not animal welfare. However the video does speak the truth about these companies and their actions.

Another dog shot by improperly trained police!!!! Just exactly how many of these will go on before we demand change?

The idea to do this post came to me from a contact on Facebook, Charlie Cifarelli. He has created a page: (Star The New York Pit Bull Shot by Police) here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/StarTheNewYorkPitbullShotByPolice Thank you Charlie for sending me the info and the link!

I understand the fear behind a rushing dog, believe me I do being the victim of a vicious dog attack, I above others understand that, however the dog that attacked me and this dog are in very different categories and circumstances.

In a society where we have companion animals, better understanding and training are quite obviously needed, I mean how many dogs have been shot this year by misguided and overly aggressive policing? Well there have been 8 reported cases in the USA and 3 reported in Canada to date this year, and I should say that I found, there could be more, so who knows the real numbers, we will never know about the unreported cases now will we?

Today police are so sadly and obviously untrained on how to deal with such situations, so let me give the good old boys in blue some insight, and this comes from over 30 years experience with dogs.., dogs give “bluff” rushes or “charges” in situations where they feel their safety or the safety of their pack is in question. That is Fact!

This dog was trying to back them off, to get people to step back, he was protecting his daddy! Plain and simple! This was no aggressive or dangerous dog, and he certainly was no “threat” to public safety.

My problem with this is a two-fold one, and it comes to play when I see police men/women not taking the “proper” steps in conflict resolution with companion animals more specifically dogs. My concerns are as follows;

Firstly the use of deadly force, when a taser or pepper spray should have been the first choice, and deadly force the last and only option, I can also tell you that pepper spray or mace would have incapacitated that dog long enough to subdue him. All police officers should be equipped with such items, Yes???

Secondly the dog appears to have no leash on, so again, we have a situation where a pit bull is out in public without proper protection, yes that’s right protection, like it or not as bully/ pitbull/ mastiff/ boxer/ rotti/ owners we are all under the microscope, ALL OF THE TIME, and we MUST protect our dogs.

As an example I always “umbilical” or waist belt my dog when we go for walks, ALWAYS!  I am not blaming the victim by any means rather I feel for this man, on many levels, but… had he been leashed, had a leash been around his owners hand, or waist maybe the outcome could have been different.

For me anyway, this is proof that police are NOT properly trained, and yet are given guns, given weapons that kill, and given carte blanch to do so, and very little training to go along with that heavy burden. It is shameful to me! It is scary that a police officer can say something like “I only had 10 seconds to react, so what could I do?” and all of a sudden it wipes the slate clean. It shouldn’t! So here’s just one more thing to think about if it was your dog, or child, or husband that they perceived in 10 seconds to be a threat, would it wipe the slate for you?

Many aspects of police work, standards and policies MUST be revamped and much more in-depth training simply MUST take place for the safety of all citizens, and their pets!

Here is the video originally released on YouTube: Star shot by improperly trained idiot policemen

What do you think about this? Please feel free to comment.

Thanks

Change to the “Dog of the Week”…. An update.

I’m baaaaaack!

Phew!!! It’s been a grueling couple of weeks in the dog training course and it looks like my next section will be a big one too, but I’ll try to keep the posts coming more often.

I am sad to say that There didn’t seem to be a lot of interest in the dog of the week, Thank you so much to all the great families that sent in all those amazing pictures of their dogs and puppies, without you these dogs would be lost!

Thanks for showing the world what love and responsible pet ownership really means, you guys rock!

So with that said I am changing things up a bit, rather than feature your dog photo’s, I thought I would feature a dog in need, rescue’s and fosters, you are welcome to send in your pictures please make sur you send a photo, and complete contact info as well as the city, state or province, and Country as well. Don’t forget to add some details about the dog, everybody like to have the story behind the picture!

You can send them to apitomesblog@shaw.ca The goal will shift from showcasing the breed to saving them from certain death in some cases, in shelters and pounds and we all know that pit bulls make up the highest percentage of shelter dogs.

Today’s little gem will break your heart, make you fall instantly in love and inspire you to get involved! As far as I know he has no name so I have taken it upon myself to dub him Esperodo loosely translated it means “He has hope” in the basque language.

With out further ado here is Esperudo:

This emaciated boy wondered into Jennifer Marcel (SNARR adoptions coordinator) neighborhood and her husband picked him up. Looks like a new SNARR baby…. the vet said He is 12 weeks old, 12lbs, a broken k-9 baby tooth, dehydrated, loaded w…ith hook worms and will need possible surgery to repair the hack job done to his ears. To help with his care donations can be made through chipin http://snarr1.chipin.com/tonka or via PayPal @ snarr_1@Yahoo.com or through our website www.snarranimalrescue.org

Please help me to help SNARR to get this boy the help he needs and ultimately help him find a safe, loving, and fur-always home.

Thanks everyone for your patience and support while I have been busy at school, you guys ROCK LIKE NEW SOCKS!

So the dog of the week shall now be dubbed “Rescue Me Weekly” and may sometimes showcase more than one dog depending on urgency.

Have a great weekend!
