Another dog shot by improperly trained police!!!! Just exactly how many of these will go on before we demand change?

The idea to do this post came to me from a contact on Facebook, Charlie Cifarelli. He has created a page: (Star The New York Pit Bull Shot by Police) here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/StarTheNewYorkPitbullShotByPolice Thank you Charlie for sending me the info and the link!

I understand the fear behind a rushing dog, believe me I do being the victim of a vicious dog attack, I above others understand that, however the dog that attacked me and this dog are in very different categories and circumstances.

In a society where we have companion animals, better understanding and training are quite obviously needed, I mean how many dogs have been shot this year by misguided and overly aggressive policing? Well there have been 8 reported cases in the USA and 3 reported in Canada to date this year, and I should say that I found, there could be more, so who knows the real numbers, we will never know about the unreported cases now will we?

Today police are so sadly and obviously untrained on how to deal with such situations, so let me give the good old boys in blue some insight, and this comes from over 30 years experience with dogs.., dogs give “bluff” rushes or “charges” in situations where they feel their safety or the safety of their pack is in question. That is Fact!

This dog was trying to back them off, to get people to step back, he was protecting his daddy! Plain and simple! This was no aggressive or dangerous dog, and he certainly was no “threat” to public safety.

My problem with this is a two-fold one, and it comes to play when I see police men/women not taking the “proper” steps in conflict resolution with companion animals more specifically dogs. My concerns are as follows;

Firstly the use of deadly force, when a taser or pepper spray should have been the first choice, and deadly force the last and only option, I can also tell you that pepper spray or mace would have incapacitated that dog long enough to subdue him. All police officers should be equipped with such items, Yes???

Secondly the dog appears to have no leash on, so again, we have a situation where a pit bull is out in public without proper protection, yes that’s right protection, like it or not as bully/ pitbull/ mastiff/ boxer/ rotti/ owners we are all under the microscope, ALL OF THE TIME, and we MUST protect our dogs.

As an example I always “umbilical” or waist belt my dog when we go for walks, ALWAYS!  I am not blaming the victim by any means rather I feel for this man, on many levels, but… had he been leashed, had a leash been around his owners hand, or waist maybe the outcome could have been different.

For me anyway, this is proof that police are NOT properly trained, and yet are given guns, given weapons that kill, and given carte blanch to do so, and very little training to go along with that heavy burden. It is shameful to me! It is scary that a police officer can say something like “I only had 10 seconds to react, so what could I do?” and all of a sudden it wipes the slate clean. It shouldn’t! So here’s just one more thing to think about if it was your dog, or child, or husband that they perceived in 10 seconds to be a threat, would it wipe the slate for you?

Many aspects of police work, standards and policies MUST be revamped and much more in-depth training simply MUST take place for the safety of all citizens, and their pets!

Here is the video originally released on YouTube: Star shot by improperly trained idiot policemen

What do you think about this? Please feel free to comment.

I am proud to announce this week is the very first “Pit Bull of the week” and this weeks star is…

Huckleberry and his beautiful sister Holiday! Below we see Huckleberry and his dad I believe, pretty cute baby picture right?

 What a face!

I included this one of Huckleberry and his sister Holiday because just like him, she is so darn cute and family always has to stick together! Huckleberry and Holidays mom tells me that she was very quickly won over by the pit bull personality, I can relate! She also says that Holiday was a rescue from a storage yard, well… you know what they say, one mans junk is another’s treasure! Thanks so much to Tom and Esther for sharing their beautiful babies with us all!

It takes all of us sticking together, working together, and networking as one united group to create change, and with owners like you both out there, we get one step closer every day!

As stated in my pics post, every week on friday I would like to feature a very special pit bull (and family) if the pictures include their human sidekicks.

Please share with your friends, and please above all else, keep the pictures coming! Keep in mind here at Apitome’s blog we don’t discriminate based on breed, but obviously we are trying to spotlight dogs labeled under the “dangerous dogs” banner, so we are trying to focus on Pit bulls, pit mixes, etc.,  But by all means don’t hold back we are always willing to show pictures of your dogs too!

Let’s show the world how great our dogs are! Lets change some hearts and minds, and lets kick down some barriers and walls!

Our dogs would do anything for us, so it’s the least we can do for them.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Networking dogs with Penny Eims!

http://www.examiner.com/dogs-in-national/duct-taped-dogs-dumped-at-shelter

Penny wrote this very sad, but often true story of abandonment. How often we have to see with vivid clarity how easy we have made it for people to abuse animals and just walk away!

I struggle with how to teach my children there is still goodness in the world when I have to see this garbage day on and day out, 365 days a year! My heart breaks for the dogs and various other animals that suffer in such ways, and by most standards sadly, this treatment was tame in comparison to some I have seen. I guess the focus should be first teaching my kids that lending aid when it is needed is key, and secondly that there are good people left in the world, people just like Penny, and just like the shelter staff that fall in love with these little innocents! They do what they do everyday, in hopes of saving just one!

Please help me to help Penny and the wonderful staff especially, (Linda Soto) at Maricopa County Animal Control, who want to see these dogs saved!

their ID# are as follows:

ID numbers on these dogs: A3107173, A3107174, A3107175, A3107176, A3107177, A3107178, A3107242 Contact:  lindasoto@mail.maricopa.gov If the dogs are not networked, they will likely not leave the facility – their owner’s cruel actions the last defining moment of their short lives.

Please network these babies, lets save them! If Dolly the pit bull’s story can go viral, why not theirs? It’s just as tragic!

Thanks much!

The Christmas Season.., What does it mean to you?

To me Christmas has always meant giving of yourself freely and with purpose, it has meant peace and good will, it has meant family and friends, and a huge sloppy wet kiss Christmas morning because the dog really wants to unwrap that bone!

I know with everything we are inundated with all year-long can be hard, so let me leave you with just  a few things to ponder before you grasp your kin and hold them close this year…

A little inspiration from my friend Stevie Ohlarik;

If you can’t adopt – foster… If you can’t foster – sponsor… If you can’t sponsor – volunteer… If you can’t volunteer – donate…or transport an animal to safety…. If you can’t donate – educate, network, and cross-post… Everyone can do something, large or small, to help save a life.

Now isn’t that what the Christmas season is all about? But should it end there? Shouldn’t it be what everyone should be doing, not trying to save the world, just a piece of it. If everyone did just one thing, imagine what that would look like.

As far as BSL goes, Don’t let it ruin a little girls Christmas or New Year, why should her friend be taken away or killed in a shelter, just because of the way he looks? Pit bulls are not ticking time bombs they are loving compassionate little creatures, who have the tenacity and drive it takes to be called man’s best friend, because now days man doesn’t seem very worthy of being a pit bulls best friend.

To all my pit bull families and friends, advocates, and rescues Merry Christmas! Thank you for standing with me, for speaking out for educating the public.

David Edelstein, Drayton Michaels, Jean Donaldson, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Kym, Kurt, Simon, Billy, Matty, Cris, Jim, and all the others I can’t possibly all fit in here.., MWAH! You all know who you are and thank you!

This year I see more people waking up from under the ether that is BSL, I see education and understanding coming before fear and bias! I see a lot of things but none of them are possible without all of you, so to each and every person that reads this blog, that shares my posts, that retweets the things I say and the messages I try to convey, who does what they can on their own to change and end BSL forever, to rescue and save a life, Merry Christmas to you as well, and thanks!

A not so Merry Christmas

Pit Bull Christmas

Now with that said and out-of-the-way I would like to have another stab at a contest I am looking for the best christmas photo or video of you and your dogs, or just your dogs celebrating christmas this year, show me your gifts, your hats, and costumes, show me the love you share with you pooch! The winner will be picked in the new year so you all have until January 3rd to submit your entries. please send all entries to apitomesblog@shaw.ca The winner will be featured on apitome’s page for pit bulls on Facebook and will be the new mascot for January on my Twitter page, and obviously will be featured here as well!

So Merry Christmas gang, and send in those pics and vids! and if you do maybe next year I’ll include a gift certificate, harness or toy! and remember to include in email what christmas means to you and your dog!
