National Pit Bull Awareness Day is coming around again, October 23rd 2010 and what a fabulous day to have! A day of learning, appreciation of the breed, understanding their unique qualities and needs, and how to find reputable information,trainers, and breeders.
At this point Personally I feel that there are many wonderful dogs waiting in shelters all over the US and Canada, waiting for their chance at a loving “For always” home!
Sometimes however, there is the need for some to seek out breeders, I will give you a place to start later.
Training is a difficult one, there are many, many wonderful trainers out there,and there are some not so good, even awful ones! It is very hard finding the right one but again I will give some basic pointers later. ultimately the choice is up to you, The one thing I will say from experience that is a must is “DO YOUR RESEARCH!” do not just place your dog into the hands of a stranger because they are affordable, or seem “Nice.”
The uniqueness of the breed and their special needs, well the unique part about Pit bulls is their unwavering, loyalty, want to please, love and need to protect. all dogs will protect their pack/family/herd whatever word you choose, the result is the same for a pit, they will lay their life on the line and never give up in terms of protecting who they love! They will withstand unmeasurable amounts of abuse at the hands of man and still want to give us humans a second chance, WOW!
Their want to please, well look at any spring pole competition, or long jump, and even freestyle competitions, Nuff said! well let’s get into it shall we!
Pit Bull Appreciation: Some great sites to check out;
My number one recently favorite site is;
PitBullLovers.com a site by a man named Jason Mann I have his website link in my side bar. Thank you Jason! for everything! Allowing me to add your link to my blog, providing me with more information for my blogs, just a BIG thanks all the way around, for all the info you have and resources available on your site is amazing! Jason’s site offers a past, present, and future Pit Bull parent all they will need to know, A first choice pick for sure!
Others to make sure you check out are;
stopbsl.com Please, please, please checkout this website, you can find them direct by link or on Facebook and Twitter! A great website! they will give you all the info you need to help any way you can.
neighborhoodbully.com Another great site. I must admit I am not a fan of the short stocky, bullies I feel like man has messed with perfection on that one, but that’s just my opinion. Great informative site none the less.
Facebook, pit bull appreciation pages such as; Pit Bulls Are Great Dogs Some Just Have Bad Owners 2, The Stubby Dog Project, Dolly The Pit Bull, etc., these pages and the people who run them are fabulous!
Twitter, another great resource
YouTube, awesome Pit Bull videos, a word of caution though be careful, some videos are not made by reputable breeders and family members of these dogs, I have personally complained about several, where the dogs were showing signs indicative of abuse and or neglect, so proceed with caution there, and do not be afraid to report abuse, neglect, or if you suspect a dog fighting organization take action, but do so not just with YouTube, but local law enforcement as well, the dogs are what is important here and their well-being! other than that I have seen many great videos of happy well-adjusted dogs (Pit Bulls) with their families, and to those families I say, BRAVO! thanks for being responsible enough to see that your family member has everything they need to be a success and an asset to society, not a detriment.
Pin Ups For Pit bulls, these women are awesome! and the cause its self, The founder, Deirdre Franklin, what a great woman! She commands my utmost respect. She has used a platform like that to create “positive change” for the breed, AWESOME!
and last but certainly not least on my list of “Fav’s” is ; Our Pack Inc. (Pit Bull Advocates For Compassion and Kindness), well the name says it all right there doesn’t it? please check them out as well.
Breeders; The only thing I will say on that is I AM NOT here to refer anyone to a breeder! See above opinion, however in an effort to stop “back yard breeders” from perpetuating the same nasty cycle or aid them in obtaining money, for the horrific way in which the conduct their “Business” I will say please, please, please do you research on that as well! It’s an absolute must! Something or someone could look good on paper or on the internet, but it does not mean that is the case in reality. A great resource would be the American Kennel Clubs list of accredited breeders, or something of that nature, but again please consider adoption first, you may just find your best friend at a local shelter! One man’s cast off’s are another man’s treasures! Remember that most of these dogs end up there due to Back Yard Breeders, Dog Fighters, and people who get these dogs for the wrong reasons. Rescue groups are always an excellent option, if you have children please ask if they ” Temperment Test” their dogs. What that means is they will usually test the dogs actions when around children, or some may have been placed in foster homes that have children, things of this nature, so ask.
As for training; again I WILL NOT recommend anyone in particular, I will say it once more RESEARCH! A great resource is check into the Canine Good Citizen Training, and or training for therapy dogs, these courses, are a wonderful asset for any dog, and these places can refer you to some qualified organizations and people, but do your homework!
Well I hope I have been able to give some info on, places to start and ways to show your appreciation of the breed! Please take October 23rd 2010 Pit Bull Awareness Day to do what you can to educate yourself on the breed, BSL, and on doing everything you can, remember you don’t have to own one to love and support them! Make informed decisions on BSL! DO NOT blindly listen to the media, radio personalities, or celebrities that want to speak of the evils of Pit Bulls, educate yourself and then decide, but with anything teeth can bite even people, so judge the Deed not the Breed!
Just a quick sharing of the love here with all the Organizations, Owners, and Supporters out there, that work so very tirelessly to end the abuse, neglect, and suffering of these beautiful dogs! you should be very proud of yourselves for all that you do for them, each and every single day! If they could give a “Bark Out!” I am sure they would!
Thank you very much for viewing and supporting my Blog, Facebook entries, and Twitters! Without you I could not have my dreams realized, so MWAH! and until next time!
